What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a refreshing skincare treatment that rejuvenates aging and photo-damaged skin. It can also be used to strip away oils and acne to help cleanse and refresh the face.

During the procedure, we apply chemical solvents to the treatment area. These solvents exfoliate the skin, replacing dead and damaged skin with fresh, glowing new skin. We offer chemical peels at different strengths to suit your skin type and goals

FAQ

How does chemical peels work?

An exfoliating skincare solution is applied to the skin, removing distressed upper layers and revealing smoother, more youthful skin underneath.

What are chemical peels used to treat?

Chemical peels are commonly used to treat wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, acne, hyperpigmentation, mild scarring, melasma, and uneven skin tone.

How many appointments do I need?

Different patients will have different skincare goals and needs, so the frequency will depend on the level and intensity of peel you choose. For a light peel, we suggest three to five peels spaced two to five weeks apart. Medium-depth peels can be repeated every six to twelve months. Deep peels may only be performed once. We will work with you to determine which treatment is right for you.

Are chemical peels safe? Does treatment have any side effects?

Chemical peels are generally regarded as safe when performed by trained skincare specialists — like our team at Kuhar Cosmetics — and if you follow your post-op instructions. In rare cases, darkening or lightening of the skin can occur as well as scarring and infections. Deep peels can come with more serious risks that our specialists will discuss in depth with you at your consultation.

Is chemical peels painful?

During the peel, you may feel warmth and stinging sensations of the treatment area. After the treatment, you may experience redness, dryness, stinging, burning, or swelling for a brief period. During a deep peel, you will be placed under general anesthesia for the duration of the treatment.

How long do results last?

It depends on the strength of the peel: light peels usually last between one and two months, medium peels can last for up to six months, and for deep peels, some patients have seen results that last for up to ten years. Ultimately, results will vary patient to patient.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

Before your treatment, we will work with you to determine what strength of peel is best to address your skincare concerns. In the days leading up to treatment, you’ll apply lotions to your skin to prepare it for treatment. We recommend you avoid tanning or direct sun exposure for two weeks before treatment. You should also refrain from waxing, epilating, or using face scrubs and exfoliants the week before the peel.

How long does a chemical peel session take?

The procedure can last between 30 and 90 minutes.

What does recovery look like?

Light chemical peels require very little downtime, with a recovery period of about four to seven days. Medium and deep peels may take two to three weeks of recovery time, though it’s common for some redness to last for months following treatment. Please be sure to follow your post-op instructions to ensure proper recovery.
